Reversed smiles

I once watched this boy on the roadside
Devour whatever the trash cans could spare
And in those moments of desperation
I could only think that all this cruelty is unfair

I knew he’d die of cholera
If he salvaged all that others threw away
If he gambled with toxicity
To salvage the rent that life would have him pay

And then I felt a hand slip inside mine
And felt my heart wanting to push and shove
And smiled mandatorily at a smile
I know I’ve long forgotten how to love

And in that moment of forced togetherness
I felt like the boy eating off the filth of a paper city
I realised I’m forcing the same trash through my heart
In craving to be someone’s priority
